PURPOSE: To provide an apparatus and a method for applying a hot cushion gum compound on the crown surface 14 of a tire carcass 16 in a strip. CONSTITUTION: This invention relates to an apparatus for applying hot cushion gum in a strip of predetermined thickness and width to the crown surface 14 of a tire carcass 16 having a sagittal plane, comprising a motor for rotating the tire carcass 16 and an extruder 18 for discharging hot cushion gum through a die head 26. The angular disposition of the die head 26 can be selected for the sagittal plane of the tire carcass 16 to determine the effective width W-SEL of the applied cushion gum strip. A rotation control mechanism is provided to selectively control the rotational angular speed of the tire carcass 16, thereby the thickness of the cushion gum strip is determined.
