An open and close control device for a horizontally slidable vehicle door (20). The device includes a horizontal endless screw (32) which is rotatably movably held within a rail (34) on the vehicle body above or below the door. The screw engages a threaded aperture in a slide (36) which is translationally movable within said rail, and may also be rotated by a rotary electromotive device (30). The slide (36) is connected to the door (20) via a gas-damped connecting rod (38) which is preferably at an angle of less than 25 DEG to said endless screw.
