A stream of water to be treated is conveyed (7, 8) to the upper part (2) of a stripping column and then flows to the lower part (3) by crossing an intermediate part (4) of said column comprising from 2 to 20 gas/liquid contact theoretical stages. Steam generated by reboiling (11) flows to the top of the column counter to the water stream to be treated and strips the hydrocarbons contained therein. At the head of the column a steam/hydrocarbon gaseous phase (5), which is condensed to form a liquid phase of a temperature equal to or below 30 DEG C, is discharged. The condensed phase is separated into an upper carbon/containing phase and a lower aqueous phase in a separator (19), the aqueous phase being preferably recycled into the stream of water to be treated. A purified water stream (6) is extracted from the bottom of the column. A particular water to be treated is oil and gas production/generated with water.
