PURPOSE: To improve the light efficiency by polarizing and converting light transmitting from a polarizer. CONSTITUTION: The light 41 from a light source lamp 40 passing through a converging lens 42, passes through a transmission window 43a mounted to the lower part of a polarization converter 43, and thereafter, is divided into transmission light 41a transmitted through the polarizer 44 and reflected light 41b reflected from the polarizer 44 by the polarizer 44 inside the polarization converter 43. Then, the reflected light 41b is passed through the transmission window 43b mounted to one example of the polarization converter 43, made incident to a video/light modulation element 45 and passed through the polarizer 44. Thus, by being passed through a λ/4 plate 61 which is a polarization element provided on the lower part of the polarizer 44, it is turned to circularly polarized light and reflected by a second reflection mirror 62 provided on the lower part. At the time, since the light 41a reflected by the second reflection mirror 62 is passed through the λ/4 plate 61 again, it is polarized to a component such as the first reflected light 41b, reflected from the polarizer 44 and made incident to the video/light modulation element 45. |
