PURPOSE:To prevent the rupture of a battery due to the explosion of a gas generated inside the battery and to provide a cylindrical alkaline secondary battery with high stability. CONSTITUTION:A reversible type explosion-proof mechanism to be built in a sealing lid 5 is designed to operate at the pressure of 1-2MPa. A battery case 4 is formed of a metal plate of 0.2mm or more in thickness. A battery element is housed in the battery case 4, and the opening part is sealed with the sealing lid 5 and an annular gasket 12 while the volume of the gap 17 in the battery is set from 0.5 to 2cm<3>.
