PURPOSE:To provide a starting method of a discharge lamp lighting device, which is comfortable to eyes without giving dizziness, and in which the brightness of a discharge lamp is changed directly after the starting of the discharge. CONSTITUTION:An interval in which the voltage applied from an inverter circuit 2 to a discharge lamp 5 at the time of starting operation of the inverter circuit 2 reaches no less than a discharge starting voltage V of the discharge lamp 5, and an interval in which the applied voltage reaches no more than a re- ignition voltage, are alternately set by a CPU 4 through a frequency setting circuit 3, and the lighting of the discharge lamp 5 is started. After the starting of the lighting, a frequency data given to the frequency setting circuit to gradually change the voltage applied to the discharge lamp 5 to provide the desired brightness, is switched by the CPU 4, through the process of setting the interval for applying the re-ignition voltage and the interval applying the voltage of no more than the re-ignition voltage level alternately to apply voltage to the discharge lamp 5. |
