According to this method, during the preheating of the diesel engine, the catalyst (14) is powered electrically in order to heat it by Joule effect. During actuation of the starter of the engine, the electric power supply to the catalyst (14) is cut off. During operation of the engine, when the temperature of the exhaust gas at the outlet of the catalytic converter (10) is below a first reference temperature higher than the triggering (priming) temperature of the catalyst, the catalyst (14) is powered electrically and when the temperature of the exhaust gases at the outlet of the catalytic converter (10) is greater than a second reference temperature, itself greater than or equal to the first reference temperature, the electric power supply to the catalyst (14) is cut off. <IMAGE>
