A device for operating a pipe fitting element comprises a body, particularly one composed of plastic, in which the shut-off element is rotationally mounted, comprises an upper element (2) equipped with a screw (20) which can be made to rotate about a longitudinal axis (4) for operating the shut-off element. Such an operating device must be improved so that with simple construction and good operational safety, it guarantees operation of the shut-off element for a long life span. It is proposed for the screw (20) to be joined solidly in terms of rotation to an operating element (6) which is particularly composed of a plastic, with the aid of which element the upper element (2) is hermetically isolated from the outside. In the plastic upper element there is rotationally located a sleeve (12) which exhibits axial guide surfaces (50) used to guide the bush (48), the screw (20) being mounted so that it can rotate freely but being axially immobilized with respect to the sleeve. <IMAGE>
