The insert comprises a horizontal lifting plate (20) movable between the bath bottom and a position level with the top edge. An elastic mat (24) covers the gap between the plate and the bath wall. The outer edge of the mat is fixed to the top edge (22) of the bath, so that it forms a watertight seal between the spaces above and below the plate. The latter can be adjusted for height in the bath by a pump (18) and rams (16). The outer edge of the mat can be detachable from the wall top edge, and the rams and pump can be contained in the bath bottom (14).
