The firmware operating method involves using a multifunction computer keyboard having a character output rate control that provides five stages that are selected by a designated 'mother' key together with a number of 'daughter' keys. For example, a keyboard character rate of five per second is selected by operation of the mother key followed by the number 2 daughter key. Protection of the system against false entries is protected by an interlock function that is set by operation of a mother-daughter key sequence. The system has an integrated buzzer function to generate a clicking noise when a key selection is entered. The functions of the keyboard are provided by a single chip programmed micro controller.
