The surgical instrument has two handles (1,2) which are pressed towards each other in order to close the jaws of the instrument. The jaws are held in the open position by a leaf spring (14) fitted between the handles and so hold them apart from each other. The leaf spring is attached to the handle (1) by a headed pin (15) and a projection (16) attached to the leaf spring. The headed pin (15) engages a keyhole slot (10) in the handle and the projection (16) engages a conical depression (13). The distance between the keyhole slot and the depression and the distance between the pin (15) and depression (13) are arranged so that when the projection engages the depression, the neck of the pin (15) is in the narrow part of the keyhole slot. USE/ADVANTAGE - The spring holds the jaws in the open position but can be removed when required without the need to use any tools.
