Calibration of air-metering instrument for honing machine - continuously gauging workpiece bores during honing by recorded pressure drop

The method of verifying the calibration of an air metering instrument is employed during the honing of workpiece (1) bores (2). In conjunction with the radial nozzles (not shown) incorporated in the honing tool (7) the instrument provides an index of the clearance between the tool periphery and the bore (2) as a function of the pressure drop recorded. An accurately machined ring gauge (4) is mounted in a holder (3) concentric with the bore (2) and positioned above the work (1) so that at regular intervals the tool (7) can be elevated into the gauge (4) and the instrument reading checked against the known clearance. Successive readings are electronically stored and errors outside tolerance investigated. ADVANTAGE - Improves accuracy of finished work by providing continuous monitor of instrument calibration. Compensates for temp. variation since work processing and testing occur together and is suitable for static or dynamic testing at honing speed.
