The system is of modular construction. It comprises a driving module (1a,1b), and a driven module (2) from which the output is transmitted either through a hub (2a) which can be bolted to the driven wheel or to the driven shaft (2b). The driven module (2) is fastened to the motor module (1a,1b) by a housing (20,30) to suit the coupling output (2a) or the shaft output (2b) respectively. The housing (20,30) extends axially beyond the epicyclic gear cage (2c) by a distance sufficient to allow a different gear assembly to be installed in the housing (20,30) in order to alter the step-up ratio or to alter the speed reduction ratio.
