A control system for a continuously variable transmission for a motor vehicle has a transmission ratio control valve (TR) for controlling the transmission ratio. The transmission ratio is controlled in accordance with a transmission ratio changing speed. The transmission ratio changing speed is corrected with a coefficient which is determined in accordance with the desired transmission ratio changing speed and the difference between desired transmission ratio and actual transmission ratio.
