A device for collecting refuse from the street comprises a main tube with a main end and a foot end, at which foot end a number of grippers which enclose a space and are curved upwards are pivotably arranged, an actuating component which is displaceable with respect to the main tube and on which the grippers are likewise pivotably arranged, and tensioning means, a handle of which is fixedly connected to one of the main tube or the actuating element, and which tensioning means are coupled to the other of these components; the tensioning means are used to tension spring means by displacing the actuating element with respect to the main tube, from a starting position into a waiting position, during which movement those ends of the grippers which are remote from the foot end move apart; and the space enclosed by the grippers may contain a collection compartment for holding refuse from the street. The characterizing feature is that locking means are provided which come into effect when the waiting position is reached and which can be unlocked manually in order for the actuating element to be pushed back to the starting position with respect to the main tube under the influence of spring means, during which movement those ends of the grippers which are remote from the foot end move towards one another. It is possible to provide rotation means which, while the actuating element is being moved back to the starting position with respect to the main tube, cause the grippers to rotate with respect to the main tube. The area which is enclosed by the grippers may be provided with a scattering device which comprises a storage reservoir for a scattering agent and a scattering head which is provided with a closable and adjustable scattering opening.
