This synchronous system makes it possible to control modems (Mi,j) which are attached to it by means of a junction interface (of type defined by the V24 standard in particular) including a plurality of junction circuits. In this system: - the modems are of the two-mode type: synchronous mode and asynchronous mode, for which they are able to execute commands of the HAYES type, - certain junction circuits are placed in a particular state during control, - the modems are provided with means for detecting this particular state in order to be placed in asynchronous mode so as to receive the said HAYES type commands.
