A mechanical and/or (electro)chemical surface treatment of aluminium profiles for a horticultural greenhouse (glass house) imparts to the surface of the profile a high degree of brightness which, moreover, provides protection over many years and moreover affords additional strength (stiffness). Owing to the higher degree of brightness, electromagnetic radiation such as heat and light is reflected to a relatively greater extent and absorbed to a lesser extent. This allows more light to enter the greenhouse (glass house) and makes it more difficult for heat and light to leave the greenhouse, thus resulting in gains in light (3-5%) and in energy. Owing to the greater stiffness, the aluminium profile can be made narrower, allowing yet more light to enter.
