PURPOSE:To obtain a method far treating carbon tetrachloride by new reaction in which the carbon tetrachloride is selectively converted into chloroform. CONSTITUTION:The objective method for producing chloroform from carbon tetrachloride is to react the carbon tetrachloride with an alkali metallic hydrosulfide and/or an alkali metallic sulfide in the presence of a phase-transfer catalyst or a dipolar aprotic solvent. Since the carbon tetrachloride can selectively be converted into the chloroform, countermeasures for methylene chloride or methane chloride formed as a by-product are not required. Furthermore, since equipment for producing the chloroform from the carbon tetrachloride is simple and the treatment can readily be carried out, this method is optimum and economical in treating a small amount of the carbon tetrachloride. Thereby, this method greatly contributes to the future prevention of environmental disruption. |
