PURPOSE:To safely produce catechol in high efficiency by culturing a microbial strain belonging to the genus Rhodococcus in a benzene-containing medium, thereby accumulating catechol in the culture liquid. CONSTITUTION:A microbial strain belonging to e.g. the genus Rhodococcus and capable of oxidizing benzene to form catechol [e.g. Rhodococcus SD801 (FERM P-12708)] is aerobically cultured in a medium containing benzene as the sole carbon source preferably at 30-37 deg.C and pH 7-8 for 1-5 days. Catechol accumulated in the culture liquid is separated and purified to obtain the objective catechol. |
