PURPOSE: To efficiently increase the volume of tobacco with gaseous CO2 by cooling the tobacco under specified conditions and bringing it into contact with gaseous CO2 under a specified pressure. CONSTITUTION: Tobacco is brought into contact with gaseous CO2 at a temp. equivalent or close to saturation conditions of gaseous CO2 under 2,758-7,287kPa pressure until it is sufficiently impregnated with gaseous CO2 , the pressure is relieved and the tobacco is exposed to conditions which expand the tobacco. Enough heat to condense a controlled amt. of gaseous CO2 on the tobacco is removed before the pressure contact so that the tobacco is cooled to -37.4 to -6.7 deg.C after the pressure is relieved.
