PURPOSE: To avoid notches or chipping in inserts during cutting operations by forming an arcuate concave convex chip breaker surface corresponding to their arcuate concave convex cutting edge. CONSTITUTION: An insert body 16 has on its top an arcuate concave convex cutting edge 18 along the peripheral edge, and a land 22 located behind the cutting edge 18. A chip breaker surface has an arcuate concave convex configuration 36 corresponding to the cutting edge 18. An insert 10 has improved force distribution across a rake face 12, which in turn reduces local stress concentration on the insert 10 at a preset depth of cutting and improves the impact strength of the insert 10 for strong cutting operations to thus prevent chipping made in the insert 10 during cutting operations. |
