The foam is made by reacting together an OH-terminated polyester, a polyisocyanate, and an aqueous alkali metal silicate in the presence of a catalyst and a surfactant, at least one component containing a dissolved blowing agent, and the aq. silicate forming 10-60% wt. of the total components. The polyester is derived from polycarboxylic acid(s) and polyol(s). The silicate may be aq. Na silicate with SiO 2 /Na 2 O weight ratio of from 2À4 to 3À25. The polyisocyanate may be a prepolymer, optionally containing some unreacted monomeric polyisocyanate. Also present may be 0À1-5% wt. of a condensable melamine-formaldehyde, urea-formaldehyde, or methylolated melamine-formaldehyde resin, and a catalyst for the condensation thereof, 0 1-2% wt. phenolic resin, or 0À1-5% HCHO. The blowing agent may be in one or both of the polyol or polyisocyanate. The product may contain silica and a salt of empirical formula Na 2 CO 3 .NaHCO 3 .2H 2 O uniformly dispersed throughout the foam.
