1513112 Methanating gases comprising carbon monoxide HARSHAW CHEMICAL CO 27 Jan 1976 [10 March 1975] 00327/77 Divided out of 1513111 Heading C5E A process of methanating a feed gas containing hydrogen and carbon monoxide and mixtures with carbon dioxide and methane comprises the steps of (a) contacting the feed gas containing at least 5% CO in a molar ratio of CO to H 2 of from 1:1 to 1:10, in the presence of a supported methanation catalyst in a reaction chamber, the catalyst support comprising at least 50% of the total weight of catalyst, the remainder including a reduced complex of oxides of nickel, copper and molybdenum, including, based on total catalyst, from 5-20% by wt. of molybdenum oxide, from 5-40% by wt. of nickel oxide and a weight ratio of nickel oxide to copper oxide of 1:1 to 9:1, (b) heating the reaction chamber to 400-625‹C., (c) maintaining the feed gas in the chamber at a pressure of 300-1800 psig for sufficient time to methanate CO, CO 2 , or mixtures and (d) recovering an effluent from the chamber containing predominantly methane on a water-free basis. A process for the production of methane comprises contacting carbon monoxide and molecular hydrogen in the gas phase in the above ratio at 400-625‹C. and 300-1500 psig in the presence of the above supported methanation catalyst. |
