The present invention relates to a method of automating transmission of documents by fax, and the devices for implementing the method. According to the invention, the method employs documents to be transmitted including coded information in a header (for example a bar code), a sending fax machine equipped with a reader of this coded information, and comprises all or part of the following steps: - insertion of the document by the operator into the sending fax machine; - decoding by the sending fax machine of the information featured on the document, and relating in particular to the telephone number of the unit to be called; - automatic dialling of the telephone number to be called; - transmission to the called unit of a second sequence of data read on the document to be transmitted; - transmission of the document; - reception and writing on the document sent of data of the called system.
