The subject of the invention is autoxidisable compounds of general formula I: <IMAGE> in which: n = 1 or 2; R<1> = -OR<4> or -NR<5>R<6>; R<2> = H, -OR<4>, (1 to 6C)alkyl or else -CH2- or -CH2-CH2-, in order to form a ring by bonding with the phenyl substituent in the position meta with respect to R<1>; and R<3> = H, (1 to 6C)alkyl or -OR<4> (if R<2> is other than -OR<4>); with R<4> = H or (1 to 6C)alkyl, R<5> = H, (1 to 6C)alkyl, -CH2COOH, -C6H5COOH or -C6H5SO3H; and R<6> = H, (1 to 6C)alkyl or -CH2COOH. These compounds can be used for assaying SOD activity in a liquid medium by using the activation of their autoxidation by the SOD activity. Application to assaying SOD activity, especially in a biological medium.
