PURPOSE: To improve forming efficiency, to enhance adhesiveness, and to increase the capacity of an active material per gram by using a predetermined material in the positive electrode of a lead-acid battery. CONSTITUTION: A paste is formed by reacting lead oxide with sulfuric acid in the presence of an excess amount of sulfate. The paste is applied to a grid and then hardened. In this case, the temperature within the reaction medium is adjusted to less than 60 deg.C, the sulfate is adjusted to excess, and the paste is hardened at 70 deg.C or more at a moisture of 100%. Through this process, a positive plate having a very uniform columnar size, tetrabasic lead sulfate (TTB), and a uniform pore distribution can be obtained. Since the widths of their crystals are 1 to 2μ on average and very narrow, the paste is quickly converted into lead oxide, resulting in further enhanced adhesiveness and current capacity. The lead oxide changed is columnar crystals with an average crystal width of less than 2.5μm. Alternatively, the paste may be formed also by reacting lead oxide with sulfuric acid at 60 deg.C or more in a stirred aqueous solution containing excess sulfate to form TTB, and mixing it with water. |
