The device includes a grasping means (1), sheets and a drive means (2) receiving the sheets which have been picked up, characterised in that the said grasping means (1) is connected to a displacement mechanism (6) animated with a to-and-fro movement parallel to the displacement of the sheet and in that it is adapted to take up the said sheet towards the rear of the latter at the start of each forward stroke, the said device comprising, moreover, a means (9) for guiding the front edge of the sheet taken up and a means (10) for bringing the stack (4) of sheets up to level again. By transferring the operation of taking up the sheet towards the rear of the latter, its transfer to the entrainment means is improved. <IMAGE>
