Fuel injection is prevented by a timer which operates for a predetermined period after mechanical cranking of the engine begins e.g. the time taken for the engine to make twenty revolutions, so that the air in the cylinder is heated by mixing with residual air heated by compression. Fuel injection may begin when the air in the cylinder reaches a predetermined temperature.
