PURPOSE: To convert a gray scale pixel value of an image into a pixel value of a smaller level by using the spread error technology. CONSTITUTION: Each pixel In, l is corrected by an error correction termεn, l weighted corresponding to a pixel processed precedingly to generate a corrected pixel value In, l+εn, l. The corrected pixel value In, l+εn, l is compared with a threshold level, quantized, and an output value Bn, l is generated. A differenceεm between the corrected pixel value In, l+εn, land the output value Bn, l is weighted through a matrix, consisting of unprocessed pixels and the result is distributed.
