The invention relates to the stabilisation of pollutant particles in a vitreous mass. The pollutant particles are coated (2-6) by means of a coating material and the pollutant particles are introduced (7, 8) directly into the core of the bath (9) of molten vitreous material, the said coating material having a melting point lower than the temperature of the bath and being selected so as to constitute a temporary thermal barrier which is sufficient to prevent the pollutant particles from decomposing during their passage from the surface of the bath to the core of the bath and the vitreous material is allowed to cool.
