The invention relates to a process for the preparation of diamines containing aliphatic and aromatic radicals of formula: <IMAGE> R1 and R2, which are identical or different, being chosen from optionally substituted (C1-C20)alkyl radicals, Ar being an optionally substituted divalent aromatic hydrocarbon radical, consisting in reducing a diketone of formula: <IMAGE> R1, R2 and Ar having the same meaning as in the formula I, in the presence of ammonia and of a catalyst containing Raney nickel, so as to obtain the corresponding diimine and in then hydrogenating the said diimine and recovering the diamine formed, optionally in the presence of a solvent, the said process being characterised in that at least the stage of reduction of the diketone is carried out in the presence of ammonium formate. The invention also relates to the new diimines and diamines and to the use of the latter as intermediates in the manufacture of aromatic polyamides.
