The communications peripheral has a transmission circuit contg. a signal path (1...7) and a clock path (8...19), with redundant coders (3, 4) in the signal path, allowing the bit rate of the signal to be transmitted to be altered, so that all signals within the digital hierarchy have the same bit rate at the output of the transmission circuit. Pref. a memory device (2) is used in front of the redundant coders for reducing phase noise and a scrambler (5) is inserted in the transmission signal path after the redundant coders. ADVANTAGE - Suitable for 2, 8 or 34 Mega bits-per-second hierarchy stages. Only one circuit necessary, as signals within hierarchy have same bit rate.
