A process is disclosed for removing a reflecting layer (15) applied on the plastic substrate (13) of a disk-shaped recording medium (11), by means of a knife-shaped element (21). By moving with respect to each other the recording medium and the knife-shaped element, the recording medium is cut through in a plane parallel to the reflecting layer, so that a shell that contains at least almost the whole reflecting layer is removed and a recording medium part that contains almost the whole substrate is left. The process is carried out by means of a device provided with a holding element for holding the recording medium.
