A method for determining the specific surface of a porous or a powdery substance includes measuring the spin-lattice relaxation rate of impregnating agent protons, in which the impregnating agent is removed from a specimen of the impregnated, examined substance at a pressure below the saturated vapor pressure of the impregnating agent. The effective spin-lattice relaxation time T1,ef of impregnating agent protons is measured at several impregnating agent levels of the specimen and the specific surface of the examined substance is determined according to a given equation.
