The thin clinch joint (10,11) connection forms a reentrant coupling (11) between stacked sheet metal plates. It uses a partial punching and/or deep-drawing with a press tool (1,7,9) in a tool guide/work hold-down member (6), and a press die (2) contg. an anvil member (3), which is moved to penetrate at least through the thickness of the uppermost plate (5). This follows a compression of at least the area (13), facing the tool end (9), to produce lateral material flow outward of the boundary (14) of the deep-drawn opening in the lower plate (4). The button-like projection thus formed on the underside is subsequently deformed by the anvil into the plane of the (lower) plate, whilst retracting the tool to provide the necessary space for the material flow.
