The instrument for measuring blood pressure, and which is connected with an inflatable arm band for the patient, and with a pumping system, has a removable front cover (36) which controls switches (33, 34) inside. When fitted, a tongue (35) projecting inwards from the cover pushes a button down, this forming one part (34) of the switch. These two switches are buttons which are interconnected by a rocker arm inside the instrument so that when one button is pushed down, the other is lifted. When the first button (33) is pushed, a valve is operated and the pumping action begins. When the second button (34) is pushed by the tongued, the pumping is stopped, and a pressure measuring mode begins. On completion of measuring the pressure, the power supply is automatically switched off.
