MOTION COMPENSATION FOR COLOUR VIDEO SIGNALS

A motion compensation technique for colour video signals R, G, B involves deriving at least one principal component P1 representing a statistical average colour of the video signal, from the video signals by means of a hotelling (KARHUNENLOEVE) transform circuit 12 and a matrix 10'. Motion compensation is applied to an interpolator 14' (or to a compressor/ decompressor) on the basis of the derived principal component P1. The technique avoids the need to provide three separate compensation circuits for each of the video signals R, G, B while ensuring that optimum use is made of the colour information in the video signals.
