A continuously variable gearbox operates by adjusting the rotary speed of a transmitted torque. It comprises a housing (11), and a rotary vane pump (3) to take up the torque and discharge a varying amount of fluid. The pump has a two inner housings (7,9) which move inside the main housing (11). Each housing has a rotor (35,37) with a rotor shaft (39,41) located to the housing (11), and several vanes (51,53). A motor (5) is driven by pump fluid pressure and is designed to ensure that the fluid returns to the pump. An eccentricity adjustment mechanism adjusts the relative movement of the two housings, so that the eccentricity of the rotor relative to the housing is minimised in one chamber and increased in the other. This sets the drive speed of the motor. USE/ADVANTAGE - Simple design, small, low weight with easy rotary speed change.
