Items 3, for example sheets, and folders 2, for example envelopes. are moved longitudinally of a conveyor 4 by entrainment members 34, 44, and are moved relative to one another transversely by pushing means 5, 14 travelling on transverse guide members 6, until the items are inserted into the folders. The guide members 6 are carried longitudinally by toothed belts, and together these comprise conveyor 4. Movement of the pushing means 5, 14 is determined by guide tracks 19, 19' which they contact beneath the conveyor 4. Separate conveyors 23 and 25, moving at the same speed as the conveyor 4, supply the folders and items respectively, and a closure flap 17 opening device 24, closure station 26, deposit station 27 and misfeed station 20 are also provided. A suction arrangement beneath the envelopes 2 and a metal guide above the conveyor keep the envelopes open during insertion (see figure 2, not shown). <IMAGE>
