A vehicle battery (10) comprises a battery case (12) for holding battery fluid and positive and negative battery plates, and a substantially rigid heat shield (30) adapted to fit over the battery case (12) so as to surround the battery case (12) and to be a tight fit on the battery case (12). The internal surfaces of the heat shield are mirror images of their corresponding outer surfaces of the battery case (12). The tight fit facilitates handling of the battery (10) and provides additional physical strength to enable the battery (10) to be handled by, for example, a robot, particularly by its end walls. The heat shield (30) and battery case (12) and lid (14) are preferably made of the same material to facilitate re-cycling. <IMAGE> |
