The required pressure calculation system obtains a difference signal (dp) from a formulated pressure signal (PO) dependant on the supplied quantity of fuel and engine revs and a signal (PAtm) representing the atmos. pressure, or a signal (PRef) representing a reference pressure. The difference signal is corrected in dependence on the temp. of the intake air and the temp,. of the engine cooling circuit before being combined with the atmos. pressure signal to obtain the required air intake or charging pressure. Pref. the initial formulated pressure signal is held between upper and lower limits dependant on monitored operating parameters.
