Hydroxylation of phenols and phenol ethers using hydrogen peroxide. More precisely, the invention relates to a process for the hydroxylation of phenols or phenol ethers by reaction with hydrogen peroxide, characterised in that the operation is carried out in the presence:   - of an effective quantity of an alkali metal or alkaline-earth metal salt of at least one protonic acid which has a pKa lower than -0.1 in water;   - and of an effective quantity of at least one phosphorus oxyacid.
