PURPOSE: To remove a sulfur compound from a sulfur compound containing gas, particularly an industrial gaseous effluent, by carrying out the Claus reaction which enables recovery of sulfur notably in the presence of catalyst and oxygen. CONSTITUTION: This catalyst for removing a sulfur compound comprises a supporting body and a supported catalytic phase formed by a solid solution having an average composition represented by Formula I in which 0<=x<=0.2 and 0<=y<=0.5 with the proviso that x and y are such that the electroneutrality of Formula I is assured and A is a metallic element stabilizing the valency of the vanadium at practically +5. Electrineutrality means that the sum of the positive charges of the cations of element A and vanadium is equal to the sum of the negative charges of oxygen atom. A is an metallic element preferably selected from the group consisting of calcium, magnesium and zinc and more preferably is magnesium. If y>=0.5 and/or x>=0.2 the free oxide of element A appears and sulfates are deposited on the catalyst surface and the activity of the catalyst decreases. |
