<p>PURPOSE: To offer a diverter valve which switches the fluid flow outlet from one to the other. CONSTITUTION: The diverter valve has an inlet port 33 and first and second outlet ports 35, 37 positioned along an arcuate path. A closure pin 23 mounted on the stem of a rotor 20 extends into the bore of the hub of a mushroom- shaped closure element 10. The surface of the domed head 12 of the closure element 10 is in contact with an O-ring seal at one of the outlet ports. When the rotor 20 is moved by an external control knob, the O-ring in contact with the surface of the domed head moves the closure element inwardly causing the element to slide on the closure pin and causing the closure pin to enter more deeply into a recess in the head of the closure element. When the closure element 10 is in place to close one of the outlet ports 35, the other outlet port 37 is opened and the pressure of the water flowing through the valve exerts a direct pressure on the head of the closure element 10. The lines of force of such pressure are perpendicular to the closure element undersurface thereby maintaining the closure element 10 in tight contact with the O-ring seal.</p> |
