<p>PURPOSE:To set the heater excitation period in response to the operational state without using a temperature sensor in the exhaust emission control device of an internal combustion engine accelerating the warm-up of a catalyst via the excitation of the heater of the heater-incorporated catalyst. CONSTITUTION:A semiconductor relay in a controller 30 is turned on when excitation is started (steps 101, 102) to excite the heater of a heater-incorporated catalyst 24. The heater feed power quantity W is calculated from the product of the excitation current and the excitation period at this time (step 103). W is subtracted from the product of the integrated value SIGMANe of the engine rotating speed and the proportional constant alpha to determine the residual energy T in the heater-incorporated catalyst 24 (step 104), and the semiconductor relay is turned off to complete the excitation to the heater when T becomes larger than the preset energy quantity beta (step 106).</p> |
