PURPOSE:To obtain the subject compound useful as a raw material for polyester in high selectivity and in high yield by reacting a specific alkenylbenzene under a specific condition. CONSTITUTION:A compound of the formula [R1 is 1-4C alkyl-containing butenyl or CH2-CH2-CH2-CH=CH-R3 (R3 is 1-4C alkyl); R2 is 1-4C alkyl] is brought into contact with a silica alumina catalyst containing 0.1-50wt.% one or more metals selected from alkali metals, zinc and gallium at 200-500 deg.C substantially in the absence of hydrogen under a vapor-phase or liquid-phase condition to give the objective compound.
