DETECTION OF FAILURE IN SCALPING OF COATED OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To exactly detect a failure in scalping without monitoring with human visual observation by detecting the load of a motor driving source which moves at least either of scalping blades and grippers at the time of scalping and automatically detecting the failure in the scalping when the detected load exceeds a set reference value. CONSTITUTION:A scalping device 4 for scalping a coated optical fiber 2 is constituted movably in a scalping direction by the motor 6. A controller 8 detects the driving current of the motor 6 and compares the driving current of the motor when the scalping device 4 is moved to scalp the coated member of the coated optical fiber 2 after the coating member is lanced by the scalping blades 14a, 14b with the previously given set reference value. The controller detects the failure in the scalping when the detected value of the motor driving current exceeds the set reference value.
