PURPOSE: To diffuse and disperse light and provide uniform lighting. CONSTITUTION: The improved fiber optical backlighting panel 10 provides intensified backlighting for elements such as a rubber key pad, a film switch, a liquid crystal display, and a rigid panel according to the quantity of light reaching the panel. The fiber optical panel includes a light source and the layer of optical fibers 24 which are arrayed adjacently to one another and transmit light made incident thereupon to different positions over all the elements, and give light of uniform intensity which is instensified to a specific position or light which is uniformly distributed over all the elements. The optical fibers 24 terminate selectively at difference places by boring holes in the layer of the optical fibers 24 by a laser according to a specific geometric pattern of dot positions stored in a computer memory.
