The present invention relates to an automatic apparatus for forming a clump of earth around the roots of a plant to be planted out. This apparatus is characterised in that it comprises a shaping device (200) which is capable of making a clump of earth around at least part of the roots, a system (300) for advancing the assembly formed by the clump and the plant, and a system (400) for packaging the clump, said advance system comprising a pusher which is relatively mobile in relation to the shaping device and to the packaging system. so that the clump (M) is successively compressed and wrapped in an aerated wrapping sheath (41) made of elastic material, due to the effect of the linear displacement of the pusher through the shaping device and the said packaging system. <IMAGE>
