Predrying and preheating coal for charging coke ovens - in which wet coal is counterflow contacted with hot gas

In a method of predrying and preheating a coal charge with hot crude gas, the wet coal is brought, in counterflow, directly in contact with the hot gas. Pref. the coal first is fed into a predrying stage and then into a preheating stage, the crude gas being at pref. 800 deg. C. The gas is recovered at about 550 deg. C. The gas after use is treated in a solids separator, pref. a cyclone; etc. USE/ADVANTAGE - As used for the coal to be charged into a coke oven, the method transfers heat energy from the crude gas to the coal more effectively, and the plant involves low costs.
